Library of Libations

Mizunara: The Library

If you’ve ever dreamed of slipping into a swank, dim-lit speakeasy, leaning against a rich hardwood bar – crisply cuffed sleeve just so – and ordering a Bond-worthy beverage, then we may have just the thing... Tucked away inside a nondescript high-rise at the quieter end of Lockhart Road (it exists), eagle-eyed agents will discover a discreet and elegant den where spiffy sirs and glam gals sip on quality cocktails – Mizunara: The Library.

Named after the wood used to mature Japanese whisky (and made from it too), Mizunara is part opulent imbiber, part catalogue of cocktails. It boasts an extensive library of liquors, whiskies and cigars comprising 600+ bottles, 150 of which hail from the Land of the Rising Sun, plus lesser-known labels from India and Taiwan.

The dozen or so signature cocktails from award-winning bartender-in-chief include the Cool Eyes (a delicate blend of vodka, Earl Grey liqueur, Specht Pampelmuse, lemon juice and blue jasmine), which was inspired by the baby blues of Britain’s most famous fictional spy.

Traditionalists needn’t worry, tried and tested favourites are also on offer, although often with an Endo-san twist, like swapping out Cognac or rye whisky for Canadian Club 12 in the styley Sazerac ‘tail, rarely seen (and almost never well-executed) in this city. Connoisseurs rejoice, this is your kind of study.
